ePrescribing and Health Information Exchange in Florida

ePrescribing in Florida Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs)

Big Bend Regional Healthcare Organization (BBRHIO)

The wave of movement toward ePrescribing in North Florida is being helped along by the electronic prescription writer available to subscribers of the Big Bend RHIO’s Health Information Exchange platform. This platform includes a suite of products that allow a full range of electronic record keeping and sharing in a web-based environment. For a healthcare provider, connectivity through the BBRHIO provides access to a basic ePrescribing program that a physician may begin using immediately to write accurate prescriptions and send them anyplace that can receive ePrescriptions.

Subscribers to the BBRHIO have additional access to an innovative new product called an Automated Medication Dispenser (AMD) that allows a physician, through the use of an ePrescriber, to dispense prescription medications directly to their patients at the point of care. The advantage of the AMD over currently available options for physician dispensing is that it handles all the functions of filling a prescription inside a secure vault about the size of a Coke machine. It allows them to dispense to their patients the same medication they would get in pharmacy, in a bottle labeled with the same information the pharmacy would provide. The AMD provides a higher level of care to patients, as well as an additional revenue stream to the physician. The AMD is available through Avocare at www.AvocareHealth.com.

The DCHD uses an electronic pharmacy record system, InteRx, and is embarking on an extensive effort to enhance patient care through an electronic process that provides direct electronic link of the providers to the electronic pharmacy record system... DCHD has evaluated the e-prescribing system, eMPOWERx, in efforts to eliminate medication transcription errors, increase prescription history access, manage prescriptions appropriately, improve documentation, and encourage formulary compliance...There are 10 health centers within DCHD. There are over 30-clinicians providing medical care. Individualized training per clinician and support staff (i.e. nurses) is necessary. The eMPOWERx staff will train each clinician for approximately 1-hour at their practice site. If eligible, hand held devices will be distributed at the time of training... The anticipated date of all providers being trained is December 2007. Currently, there are 7-DCHD clinicians using eMPOWERx...
