Florida Personal Health Record Toolkit

Will your health information get swept away when disaster strikes?

ePHR Features

Many electronic personal health record (ePHR) systems offer easy-to-use tools for organizing or visually tracking health information on a graph.  Some allow consumers to communicate with their physicians for scheduling appointments, or with the pharmacy and physician when ordering prescription refills.  Some ePHRs offer reminders for refills, appointments and other health-related activities.  Some offer health news and alerts.  Some ePHRs can hold radiology reports, EKGs, and mammograms.  Some systems are capable of uploading information from medical devices such as blood glucose monitors.

Consider choosing an ePHR with these features:

  • Secure access and logon;
  • Administrative features (i.e. ability to set-up authorized users and access levels, change passwords, add fields, etc.);
  • Easy-to-use templates and forms with an array of entry capabilities sufficient to allow for a comprehensive, complete and contiguous health record, see the minimum Contents of a PHR;
  • Health information tracking and health reports;
  • Ability to download health information to a portable device or your personal computer;
  • Ability to attach supporting documents and test results;
  • Appointment calendar;
  • Prescription refill reminders;
  • Medical record update alerts; and
  • Interoperability with other systems and health information upload capability.
You may wish to discuss your choice of an ePHR system with your personal physician, especially if you are purchasing a service for a specific medical reason.
